Airport Outfits: 8 Comfy Formulas That Survive Security, the Gate, and Seat 23B
Every airport outfit has to survive four climates.
The curb, where it's whatever the weather is. Security, where your jacket, your belt, and your dignity ride through in a bin. The gate, which is somehow stuffy and drafty at the same time. And the plane, where seat 23B has a vent aimed directly at your neck for the next four hours.
Most airport outfits are dressed for the photo at the gate. Yours has to make it to baggage claim.
So we built eight formulas, one for each kind of travel day, all around a single layer that works as a jacket, a blanket, and in a pinch, a pillow.
Quick Answer: The Best Airport Outfit
The best thing to wear to the airport is a soft, stretchy base, shoes that slip on and off, and one warm layer you can take off fast at security and wrap up in on the plane. Think leggings or relaxed pants, a breathable tee, sneakers, and a button-front layer with a hood and pockets. Comfort comes first, with enough polish that you won't mind running into someone you know.
The Airport Outfit Formula
A base that stretches. Leggings, joggers, or soft wide-leg pants. Nothing with a waistband you'll regret by hour three.
A top that breathes. A tee or a thin long sleeve. Jet bridges are hot. Cabins run cool. You need to be ready for both.
Shoes that slip on. Sneakers or flats you can get in and out of without sitting down.
One layer, three jobs. Jacket at the curb, blanket at 30,000 feet, pillow against the window. A Sherpa Lounger closes with one button, so it comes off in two seconds at security. On the plane it's a blanket with sleeves, a hood for the window seat, and pockets for your boarding pass. Jill Martin made it because she wanted a blanket she could wear outside. An airplane is about the outside-est inside there is.
Hands free. A fanny pack for your ID, phone, and lip balm, so you're not digging through a tote at the front of the line.

Your team's Lounger |
1. The 6am Flight
You got dressed in the dark. It should still work. Leggings, a tee, slip-on sneakers, and the full-length Classic Lounger over all of it. Black hides the coffee you're about to spill. Hood up at the gate tells the world you're not ready to talk yet.
2. The Long Haul (and the Red-Eye)
This is where comfy airport outfits earn their keep. Soft joggers, a long sleeve, compression socks, and a Lounger you can button up and disappear into. Thumbholes keep the sleeves down. The hood blocks the reading light from 24C. Roll it up and it's a pillow. Airline blankets are mostly a rumor at this point anyway.
3. Cold to Warm
You're leaving February and landing in Florida. Dress in layers that peel: a tee, light pants, and a sherpa hoodie you can tie around your waist when the doors open. The Lounger Lite is the lighter, packable version of the Lounger, and right now it comes in team colors.
4. Warm to Cold
Headed to the snow? Wear your bulk. Boots and your heaviest sweater go on your body, not in your suitcase. (Stretchy jeans only. See below.) Top it with a faux fur jacket, which counts as your coat and your airport look, and keep the faux fur trapper hat in your bag for the walk to the rental car.
5. Carry-On Only
The first rule of carry-on only: the biggest thing you're bringing goes on your body. The Cropped Lounger gives you the same hood, thumbholes, and blanket feel with less fabric to manage in a middle seat.
6. The Work Trip
You land at 9 and you're in a meeting at 10. Black stretch pants, a knit top, clean sneakers or loafers, and the Cropped Lounger in Black. Buttoned, it reads like a jacket. Nobody needs to know it's a blanket.
7. Flying With Kids
You are the luggage cart. Dress like it. A fanny pack keeps the IDs and the wipes on you. The Lounger's pockets hold the snacks. And when a toddler finally falls asleep on your chest somewhere over Kansas, you're already wearing the blanket.
8. Flying to the Game
Travel day is game day eve. Wear the colors. NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, and college Loungers go from the plane to the tailgate without a costume change. Our game day outfit formulas pick it up from there.
WARNING: YOU MAY SLEEP THROUGH THE SNACK CART. WE REGRET NOTHING.
What Not to Wear Through Security
You can't control the line. You can control how fast you get through it.
A lot of metal. Big belt buckles, stacks of bracelets, heavy jewelry. Pack them and put them on at the gate.
Complicated shoes. Anything you'd need to sit down to take off, in case you're asked to.
A layer that's hard to remove. Outer layers usually ride through the scanner in a bin. Wear one that comes off in two seconds. One button helps.
Full pockets. Empty them into your bag before you get in line.
Screening rules change and can vary by airport, so check the TSA website before you fly.
Jeans or Leggings on a Plane?
For anything over two hours, leggings or soft pants. The real question isn't denim, it's the waistband. If it stretches when you sit, you're fine. Stretchy jeans work for a short hop. Stiff jeans on a six-hour flight are a decision you'll think about the entire time. Either way, the layer on top is doing the real work.
Travel Outfits for Women Who Want to Look Put Together
You don't have to pick between comfortable and polished. Same formula. Nicer shoes.
Go tonal. Ivory Lounger over cream. Black over black. It looks like you planned it.
Pick a neutral layer. A full-length Lounger in Caramel Teddy or Ivory passes for a coat. For a cute airport outfit with more of your look showing, go Cropped in Leopard or Faded Denim.
Add one thing. A real shoe or one good necklace. That's the whole difference.
The sherpa jacket style guide has more ways to wear it.
Packing the Rest: The 3-3-3 Rule
The 3-3-3 rule is a packing shortcut: three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes that all go together. That's nine pieces and 27 outfits. Then add the one cozy layer you wear on the plane, which doesn't count against your suitcase because it's on your body. For the basics, borrow our college packing list.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best thing to wear to the airport?
Wear a soft, stretchy base like leggings or joggers, a breathable top, slip-on shoes, and one warm layer that's easy to remove at security. A button-front layer with a hood and pockets works as a jacket in the terminal and a blanket on the plane.
What should a woman wear to the airport?
A good airport outfit for women is leggings or relaxed pants, a tee or light sweater, comfortable sneakers or flats, and a cozy layer for the cold cabin. A crossbody or fanny pack keeps your ID and phone easy to reach.
Is it better to wear jeans or leggings on a plane?
Leggings or soft pants are better for most flights, because they stretch when you sit and don't dig in at the waist. Stretchy jeans are fine for short flights. For long flights, choose the softest waistband you own.
What should you not wear through TSA?
Skip heavy metal jewelry, big belt buckles, and bulky layers that take time to get off, and empty your pockets. Shoes usually stay on now, but you can still be asked to take them off, so wear a pair that slips off. Rules change, so check the TSA website before you fly.
What should a woman over 50 wear to the airport?
Exactly what she'd wear at 30: a stretchy base, a soft top, shoes she can walk a terminal in, and a neutral full-length layer that passes for a coat. Comfortable has no age limit.
What should you wear on a long flight?
For a long flight, wear soft joggers or leggings, a long-sleeve top, warm socks, and a layer that works as a blanket. Skip stiff waistbands and anything tight. A hood helps you sleep, and shoes that slip on are easier after hours of sitting.
What do you wear on a plane to stay warm?
Bring a layer that works like a blanket. A wearable blanket or sherpa lounger with a hood and thumbholes keeps you warm in a cold cabin and leaves your hands free. Add socks and closed-toe shoes, since feet get cold first.
Dress for Seat 23B
Eight formulas. One rule. Dress for the coldest part of the trip, and make sure the warm part comes off fast.
Button up. Hood up. Wheels up. 💙
