The Michigan-Specific Reality

The beds are Twin XL. Michigan Housing lists the standard mattress at 36 by 80 inches, which means Twin XL sheets. The standard-twin set from home won't fit. Two sets, plus a topper, because that mattress has met a few freshman classes. (Confirm your assigned room before you order.)

The walk is real. If you land on North Campus, the Bursley bus becomes your commute, and the wait for it in February is a full outdoor experience. The layer for the walk isn't a nice-to-have here. It's the plan.

Winter is not a rumor. Ann Arbor gets properly cold, the kind that makes the Diag feel twice as long. Bring a real coat for the worst weeks, and one cozy layer that goes over everything else and works indoors too.

Saturdays are their own season. Game day at the Big House starts early and runs long, and the temperature at kickoff and the temperature on the walk home are two different seasons. Dress for the second half.

Read the housing list. Michigan Housing publishes its own rules on appliances and heat sources. Read it before you buy anything with a cord.

Michigan Dorm Packing: What to Buy First

The room basics come first: Twin XL sheets, a pillow, a blanket or comforter, laundry supplies, and a lamp that meets Housing's rules. Compare notes with your roommate before buying shared appliances or storage. Two fridges is a lot of fridge for one dorm room.

Then pick the pieces you'll use beyond move-in. A throw for your desk chair. A Lounger for the walk to class. The necklace and faux fur below are game day extras, so choose what you'll wear. Your whole packing list does not need to be maize and blue. We respect the commitment, though.

Game Day in Ann Arbor

The Big House holds more people than most towns, and every one of them is layered. The formula that survives from tailgate to fourth quarter: Michigan Lounger on top, broken-in denim, shoes you can stand in for four hours. Cropped for the sunny September games, full Lounger for November.
